Colonic Irrigation Preparation & Aftercare — Complete Guide

Getting the most from your colonic irrigation session starts well before you arrive and continues after you leave. This guide covers exactly how to prepare for colonic irrigation, what happens during your appointment, and the aftercare steps that help your body recover and benefit fully from the treatment.

Before Your Session

How to Prepare for Your Colonic Irrigation Session

Proper preparation ensures a more comfortable experience and a more effective treatment. Follow these guidelines in the 24 hours leading up to your appointment.

What to Eat in the 24 Hours Before

Foods to Eat

  • Steamed vegetables (broccoli, zucchini, carrots, sweet potato)
  • Light vegetable soups and clear broths
  • Simple proteins (grilled chicken, steamed fish, eggs)
  • Cooked rice or quinoa (small portions)
  • Fresh fruit (watermelon, papaya, pear)
  • Herbal teas (peppermint, chamomile, ginger)

Foods to Avoid

  • Red meat and heavy proteins
  • Dairy products (cheese, milk, cream, yoghurt)
  • Fried, greasy and processed foods
  • Raw vegetables and large salads
  • Carbonated drinks and fizzy water
  • Alcohol, excess caffeine and sugary drinks

Hydration

Drink at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water throughout the day before your appointment. A well-hydrated colon responds better to the treatment and waste softens more readily. Avoid excess coffee or alcohol as both are dehydrating.

What to Wear

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to change in and out of. Avoid tight waistbands, belts or restrictive garments. You'll be lying on a treatment bed, so comfort is key for relaxation during the session.

Arrival Time

Arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before your appointment so Sara can prepare the treatment space for you. If you are more than 15 minutes late, your session may be forfeited and your deposit lost. Allow 75 minutes total.

Critical: Stop eating entirely 3 hours before your appointment. An empty stomach ensures a more comfortable and effective treatment.

During Your Appointment

What to Expect During Your Session

Your 75-minute appointment begins with a consultation. First-time clients receive an initial assessment where Sara reviews your health history, digestive patterns and goals for the treatment. Returning clients have a brief follow-up check-in to track progress.

You'll then change into a gown and lie on a comfortable treatment bed. Sara inserts a slim, sterile, single-use tube and begins cycling warm, purified water through the colon in gentle waves. The water softens compacted waste, which is released naturally along with trapped gas.

Throughout the session, Sara applies targeted abdominal massage to help move gas pockets, relax the colon wall and guide waste towards elimination. The treatment portion runs for 40 to 50 minutes. Afterwards, you'll have private time to use the bathroom before dressing and receiving your aftercare guidance.

The entire process is private, dignified and professionally managed. Sara's primary focus is ensuring your comfort at every stage.

After Your Session

Aftercare — What to Do After Your Colonic

How you treat your body in the hours and days following your colonic irrigation session significantly impacts how much benefit you receive. These guidelines help your digestive system recalibrate and maximise the cleansing effect.

Hydration Post-Treatment

Drink generously for the remainder of the day, aiming for at least 2 litres of water. The colonic process hydrates the colon during treatment, but your body continues to flush waste and toxins afterwards. Coconut water, herbal teas and warm lemon water are all excellent options. Avoid caffeine and alcohol for at least 24 hours, as both dehydrate the body and counteract the cleansing work done during your session.

Eating After a Colonic

Your colon has just been thoroughly cleansed and the lining is temporarily more sensitive. Reintroduce food gently with light, warm, easy-to-digest meals. Vegetable soups, steamed vegetables, bone broth, miso soup and cooked grains are ideal first meals. Avoid rich, spicy, sugary, greasy or heavily processed foods for at least 24 hours. Raw vegetables and large salads are also best postponed for a day as they require significant digestive effort.

Rest and Recovery

Allow your body time to process what has happened internally. Light walking is beneficial and can support continued lymphatic movement, but avoid intense exercise, heavy lifting, hot yoga or saunas for the rest of the day. Some clients feel an immediate surge of energy while others feel pleasantly tired. Both responses are completely normal. A good night's sleep will have you feeling noticeably clearer and more energised by the next morning.

Emotional Releases — What to Expect

The gut contains a vast network of nerve tissue, sometimes referred to as the enteric nervous system or "second brain." As waste and toxins are released during colonic irrigation, some clients experience unexpected emotional responses: tearfulness, a sense of relief, lightness, or memories surfacing. This is a well-documented phenomenon and is completely normal. Allow space for these feelings without judgement, and know that they typically pass within hours as the body recalibrates.

Quick Answers

FAQ

Can I eat on the day of my colonic?

Yes, but keep it light and stop eating entirely 3 hours before your appointment. Fruit, plain toast, a light smoothie or steamed vegetables are all suitable options earlier in the day. The key is to arrive with an empty stomach so the treatment can work as effectively as possible.

What should I avoid before a colonic?

In the 24 hours before your appointment, avoid red meat, dairy products, fried and greasy food, raw vegetables, carbonated drinks, excess caffeine and alcohol. These items slow digestion, increase gas production or dehydrate the colon, all of which make the treatment less comfortable and less effective.

Can I exercise after colonic irrigation?

Light movement like a gentle walk is perfectly fine and can even support continued lymphatic drainage. However, avoid high-intensity workouts, heavy lifting, hot yoga or saunas for the remainder of the day. Your body has just completed an internal cleansing process and needs energy for recovery rather than exertion.

Why do some people feel emotional after a colonic?

The gut contains an extensive network of nervous tissue, often called the "second brain." When accumulated waste and toxins are released, some clients experience emotional shifts such as tearfulness, a sense of release, unusual lightness, or even memories resurfacing. This is a recognised response and typically passes within a few hours as the body processes the physical and emotional clearing.
