First-Timer's Guide to Colonic Irrigation — Everything You Need to Know
If you have been considering a colonic but keep hesitating because you're unsure what happens, whether it hurts, or whether it will be awkward, this guide is for you. Every question you are too embarrassed to ask is answered below. And the honest truth? Most first-timers say they wish they had done it sooner.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Your appointment lasts 75 minutes in total, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. This is not a rushed, production-line experience. Sara allocates generous time for consultation, treatment and aftercare because first sessions require more explanation, more adjustment and more care than repeat visits. You will not feel hurried at any point.
The clinic is located at Suite 3, 245 Macquarie Street, Liverpool. It is a private, quiet, purpose-built treatment space. When you arrive, Sara greets you personally (she is the only practitioner at the clinic), invites you to use the bathroom if needed, and then begins with a seated consultation in the treatment room. The atmosphere is calm, warm and professional.
What to Do Before You Arrive
The preparation is simple. In the 2 to 3 hours before your appointment, eat lightly. A small meal or snack is fine; just avoid anything heavy, fried or rich. Drink plenty of water throughout the day (your standard 2+ litres). Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior. And wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that is easy to partially remove (you will undress from the waist down and be covered with a sheet). For the detailed preparation protocol, including dietary guidance for the days leading up to your session, see our preparation and aftercare guide.
That's it. There is no special diet, no fasting requirement and no need to take any products beforehand. Sara handles everything else.
What Happens During the Session
The sealed system means dignity is maintained throughout. Waste exits through a closed tube into the drainage system. You cannot see it (unless you choose to, as the viewing tube is optional). Sara cannot see it (she is focused on your abdomen and your comfort). There is no odour, no exposure and no moment where you feel vulnerable. This is a clinical treatment performed with the same professionalism as any health procedure.
What to Expect After
Immediately after the session, most first-timers describe feeling noticeably lighter, with a flatter abdomen and a calm, clear-headed sensation. Some experience a burst of energy; others feel deeply relaxed and slightly fatigued (a sign that the body has shifted into parasympathetic recovery mode). Both are completely normal responses.
In the first 24 hours, you may experience mild, temporary effects: a few additional trips to the bathroom as the colon continues to release residual water and material, slight gurgling as the digestive system recalibrates, and an increased sense of thirst (your body requesting hydration to support the post-treatment recovery). These are positive signs that the treatment is working. Drink 2.5 to 3 litres of water and follow the post-colonic dietary guide for the best results.
Your first bowel movement after the treatment (typically within 24-48 hours) is often described by first-timers as the most comfortable and complete evacuation they have experienced in months. This is the baseline your body is capable of when the colon is clear and functioning at its designed capacity.
Frequently Asked First-Timer Questions
Does a colonic hurt?
No. The speculum insertion is brief and uses generous lubrication; most clients describe it as mildly unusual rather than painful. During the water cycling, you may feel gentle pressure or a mild urge to release, similar to a natural bowel movement. Sara adjusts the water flow continuously in response to your comfort, and you can ask her to pause or slow down at any point. Many first-timers are genuinely surprised by how relaxed and comfortable the experience is.
Is it embarrassing?
This is the number one concern first-timers share, and it is entirely understandable. The reality: the sealed system eliminates mess and odour. You are covered with a sheet throughout. Sara has performed thousands of sessions and approaches the treatment with the same clinical professionalism as any health practitioner. Within the first few minutes, virtually every client's self-consciousness dissolves as they realise there is nothing to be embarrassed about. The experience is far more dignified than most people imagine.
What should I do before my first colonic?
Eat lightly in the 2-3 hours beforehand (avoid heavy, fried or rich meals). Drink plenty of water during the day. Skip alcohol for 24 hours. Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Arrive 5 minutes early so you are not rushing. There is no special preparation beyond these basics. Sara explains everything when you arrive and answers any last-minute questions before starting. The full preparation protocol is available on our preparation guide.
A Note from Sara
Every single person who walks through my door for the first time was nervous beforehand. Every single one. The nervousness is normal, expected, and welcome. It tells me you are taking the decision seriously and that you care about your body. My role is to make the experience so comfortable, so professional and so genuinely positive that your only regret is not having booked sooner.
